Imperial Beach City Council members voted May 21 in support of community efforts to raise funds to pay half the cost for a 4th of July fireworks celebration on the beach, splitting cost of the event 50/50 between city coffers and local community organizations and individuals.
City residents Candy Unger and Tim O'Neal began working with city staff, volunteers and a private company to put together funds for the event. At last report, over $12,500 toward a goal of $25,000 had been raised from the community, enough to cover the down payment.
Mayor Jim Janney credited the group's aggressive efforts as worthy of city support matching the goal of the additional $25,000, for a total of $50,000. The city will provide funding for necessary municipal and ancillary services such as public safety, public works, permits and additional services from the San Diego County Sheriff's Department.
