Dana Point Under High Surf Advisory Through Christmas: NWS

Look for large breaking waves on west-facing beaches starting this weekend through Christmas day. Here's what to know.

DANA POINT, CA — Dana Point area beaches, along with all Orange County beaches and coastal areas, were placed under a High Surf Advisory this weekend through Christmas day, according to the National Weather Service.

The surf advisory was expected to begin Saturday at 10 p.m. and last through Wednesday at 4 a.m., according to the NWS statement.

Swimmers and surfers in the Orange County coastal areas, including San Clemente, Dana Point, Laguna Beach, Newport Beach, Huntington Beach, and Seal Beach, were all under the lengthy High Surf Advisory.

According to the coastal hazard statement, beachgoers were warned of 4—to 8-foot waves, with locally higher waves, possibly up to 10 feet, on west-facing beaches. Further south, beachgoers in San Diego County should be aware of large breaking waves of up to 8 to 12 feet, with locally higher sets on west-facing beaches.

"There will be dangerous swimming and surfing conditions and localized beach erosion," the NWS said. "Despite relatively low astronomical tides, such high surf may produce minor flooding of low-lying areas along the beach such as beach parking lots."
