6 Trapped In Mudflow Near Soboba Casino Mudflow: Cal Fire

Swiftwater rescue teams worked to rescue occupants of a mud-trapped vehicle in the San Jacinto area, leaving the roadway completely blocked.

SAN JACINTO, CA — Cal Fire/Riverside County Fire Department's Swift Water Rescue Team aided in the rescue of multiple people trapped inside several vehicles near San Jacinto's Soboba Casino Resort Thursday.

Just after 6 a.m., 911 callers reported the vehicles and their occupants were trapped in the middle of a mudflow at Soboba Road, near Chabela Drive and State/Gilman Springs Roads, according to a Cal Fire spokesperson.

The hillside in that area slumped into the roadway amid heavy rains Thursday morning, according to video from the scene. According to Cal Fire and the City of San Jacinto, that section of roadway would be closed for an undetermined period of time.

"Several occupants were trapped inside vehicles, and the Swift Water Rescue Team was able to walk out six patients, all evaluated by medics on the scene," they said.

All six were released, and no one was hospitalized. Meanwhile, road crews worked to clear the mudflow and vehicles from the roadway.

The area remained under a National Weather Service flood advisory until at least 8:45 a.m. Thursday, and a Flood Watch until 6 p.m. Thursday.

The forecast for Thursday called for rain before 11 a.m., then showers between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m., then showers and possibly a thunderstorm after 2 p.m.

"Some of the storms could produce heavy rainfall, they said. High near 51. Breezy, with a west wind 5 to 15 mph increasing to 15 to 25 mph in the afternoon. Winds could gust as high as 40 mph. The chance of precipitation is 100%. New rainfall amounts show totals between a half and three-quarters of an inch possible," the National Weather Service said.
