The Riverside County Sheriff’s Department is distributing free gunlocks to the public as part of a firearms safety campaign.

“We would like to remind members of the public that as gun owners, it is not only your responsibility to know how to properly handle your firearms, but you also have a legal responsibility to properly secure your firearms to prevent children from having access to them,” according to a sheriff’s statement.

Sheriff’s officials said the gunlocks are being distributed with particular concern toward curbing juvenile firearm incidents, many of which result in accidental deaths or injuries.

It will not be necessary to show proof of gun ownership or to make an appointment to receive one of the small cable devices, which can be accessed using a key.
