Union Pacific officials were working with local authorities to understand what led up to the incident.

JURUPA VALLEY, CA — A man was struck and killed by a freight train while standing on Union Pacific railroad tracks in Jurupa Valley, officials confirmed Thursday.

The fatality occurred about 6:30 p.m. Wednesday on UP tracks in the largely industrial area around Mission Boulevard and Wineville Road, just north of the Pomona (60) Freeway, according to the railroad.

UP spokeswoman Meg Siffring told City News Service that the victim, identified by the coroner as 45-year-old Anthony Ortega of Jurupa Valley, was not at a crossing when the impact happened.
