Man Wanted on Suspicion of Assault With a Deadly Weapon — a Mop Handle

Officials temporarily blocked off Park Street at North Livermore Avenue during search.

Police are searching for a man who reportedly beat someone with a mop handle at a downtown parking lot Monday morning, Sgt. Todd Madrid said.

During the search police closed down Park Street off North Livermore Avenue, where the suspect was last seen.

The man, who police said is a transient named Ray, is wanted on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon.

At about 10:40 a.m. police used a patrol car's PA system to get the suspect out of his mobile home vehicle, which is parked on Park Street. An officer said through the PA system that the man is under arrest.

However, police searched the vehicle with a K-9 and discovered he wasn't inside. Officers then searched a nearby home, police said, but were unable to find him.

The victim, a man, is being treated at Eden Medical Center in Castro Valley for facial injuries, Madrid said.

A group of people watching the scene unfold from a parking lot across the street said the wanted man has been causing problems with the area's homeless community. It's near , which holds a free breakfast for the homeless on Mondays.
