📰 Here are the top five stories in Long Beach today:
1) Washington neighborhood members residing along 16th Street demanded traffic safety solutions on Friday. “In the span of two weeks, three pedestrians have been injured in traffic collisions near the area.” On 16th and Locust, neighbors hear cars doing donuts after dark. “The city needs to make a stoplight, install a roundabout or the police need to be more vigilant,” residents said. Other proposals include speed humps on Locust, Pine and Elm. (Long Beach Post)
2) On Tuesday morning, the LBPD received another report of a shooting. This one took place in the “3600 block of Santa Fe Avenue.” The victim had transported himself to the hospital and explained to officers that “he was in his vehicle when he was approached by an unknown male suspect and had a brief verbal altercation, which subsequently resulted in the suspect firing a gun at the victim, striking him.” (LBPD)
3) The Long Beach Walls event ended last week, but the ten murals that were painted are here to stay. We have already talked about the two libraries – Burnett and Harte – that have murals. The other eight you can see on the Dana Library on Atlantic, the Sowing Seeds of Change garden on San Francisco, the Pine Animal Hospital, the Boys & Girls Club on Del Amo, Studio One Eleven on Third, the Partake Collective on Elm, and two on the Daisy Diner. (The HiLo)
4) The Long Beach Unified School District announced on Thursday that the “Sato Academy of Mathematics and Science’s Engineering and Architecture Pathway is the latest to earn Gold Certification from the Linked Learning Alliance.” Located at 1100 Iroquois Avenue, the Sato Academy joins the “the Academy of Law and Justice at Cabrillo High School and two pathways at McBride High School: the Engineering pathway and the Criminal Justice and Investigation pathway” in this honor. (LBUSD)
5) Mark your calendars! The Belmont Car Show is coming to 2nd Street on Sunday! It's the 31st time enthusiasts will show off their rides. And it’s the first time in three years that an estimated 40,000 people will appreciate the estimated 400 cars that will look their best. “Additionally, the event is on 9/11. There will be a synchronized honking of horns at 9:11 a.m., followed by a moment of silence and reflection.” Be there at 9 a.m.! (Press-Telegram)
