📰 Here are the top five stories in Long Beach today:
1) On Wednesday, the PD arrested a 25-year-old parolee in the 300 block of Lime Avenue. He is suspected of “multiple felony offenses, including robbery, possession of a firearm by an ex-felon and violation of parole.” In particular, he is believed to be a suspect in the “armed robbery of two people outside a 99 Ranch Market in Rowland Heights.” (Long Beach Post)
2) Belmont Shore is at the heart of the “Parking, Not Parklets” movements. In the middle of August, we reported on six restaurants along 2nd Street that applied to make their parklets permanent. On Wednesday, we learned that “citywide, 36 applications for permanent parklets were received, and 23 were deemed feasible. Of that number, 13 are in the Belmont Shore-Naples area. About 10 were in Belmont Shore/Belmont Pier area.” Critics now say that the parklets were supposed to be temporary. Proponents explain that the City Council voted to give businesses the right to apply for making their parklets permanent. There are now petition drives and neighborhood groups representing some but not all Belmont Shore areas arguing on the issue. (Patch, Press-Telegram/paywall)
3) Ozzy Osbourne is releasing "Patient Number 9," and fans are clamoring to get their hands on the album. Long Beach residents now have the opportunity to get their copy autographed by the 73-year-old “Prince of Darkness.” Head on down to Fingerprint Music at 420 East 4th Street on September 10 at 2 p.m. Of course, as is always the case at these events, there are rules in place. The musician will only sign the new album, won’t take photos with fans and requires you to wear masks. (Fingerprint Music)
4) We learned on Wednesday that Wilson’s boys’ swim coach Berg “stepped down after 16 very successful seasons coaching the Bruins.” Taking his place will be “fellow Bruins alum Brandon D’Sa.” However, Coach Berg will still be around, particularly as “a mentor and resource for the Bruins’ two new young boys’ aquatics coaches: D’Sa running the swim team, and Zac Polmanteer with the water polo team.” (The562.org)
5) Mark your calendars! The city is bringing a mobile shredding truck to the LBCC Pacific Coast Campus Parking Lot 2 on September 10. It will be there from 8 a.m. until 10 a.m. This is an excellent opportunity to shred confidential papers of all types. Each resident may bring up to three boxes of papers. (City of LB)
