📰 Here are the top five stories today in Long Beach:

1) It’s time for a weekend crime roundup! On Friday, officers encountered a stabbing victim in the 2300 block of East Artesia Boulevard who survived an attack by a would-be robber. Later, there was an apparent drive-by shooting in the 2000 block of West Spring Street, which injured three. A stabbing at the Mineshaft Bar at 1720 East Broadway left a 28-year-old man dead. On Sunday, officers met a man who was stabbed by a relative in the 1700 block of Coronado Avenue. Next, they went to a shots fired call in the 1800 block of Cedar Avenue but found no suspects or victims. More shots fired were reported in the 2500 block of Lakewood Boulevard. (LBPD, 2, 3)

2) There was a gun buy-back event at Ramona Park on Saturday. Organizers said that they took in around 200 weapons that will now be destroyed. “We don’t need to have guns,” said California Attorney General Rob Bonta. Another buy-back event several months ago “at Veterans Stadium saw 280 guns turned over.” (Long Beach Post)

3) Last Wednesday, the Long Beach Area Chamber came out in support of AB1322, which supports “sustainable aviation fuel incentives.” One of the legislation's goals is to get “cleaner skies by 2045.” However, critics believe this is a case of the legislature gifting “Amazon, Boeing, and United a public relations bonanza.” (The LB Chamber, #AB1322)

4) Do you wish that you could tell drivers to slow down in front of your home? You can! Public Works is running the “city’s “Safe Drivers Make Better Neighbors” campaign.” We learned on Sunday that you can “request a complimentary yard sign to encourage drivers to drive cautiously and at safe speeds.” The signs are available in English and Spanish. (Public Works)

5) Mark your calendars! The 12th annual Catalina Film Festival opens on September 21 at the Scottish Rite Center on 855 Elm Avenue. On September 23, the Festival moves to the Avalon Casino on Catalina Island. In addition to screenings, there will be workshops and Q&A sessions. (Press-Telegram)

📆 Today in Long Beach:

  • Volunteer To Pack/Deliver Meals for Ill, Disabled, & Elderly Homebound Residents at Meals on Wheels (7:30 a.m.)
  • Wonder Women Tech Immersive Tech & Hybrid Summit (online) (10 a.m.)
  • Bixby Park Farmers Market at Junipero between 1st & 2nd streets (3 p.m.)
  • Coffee with Pastors at Sheldrake Coffee Roasting (4 p.m.)
  • Vision Boards & Vino at the Alpert Jewish Community Center (6 p.m.)

📓 From my notebook:

  • An El Dorado Park Estates neighbor has a gardener question. Their gardener is raising his price, and the neighbor is curious as to what the going rate is and what all services are included. They currently pay $75 a month, and he comes every week. They are increasing the price to $85. (Nextdoor)
  • An unhappy Belmont Heights Central neighbor is complaining about the 2nd Street parklets, once a godsend to local restaurateurs, which have now become a nuisance. Pre-COVID life has now returned, resulting in sidewalks flowing with pedestrians and, unfortunately, bicycles. (Nextdoor)
