Homeless Go-Kart Driver Killed In Crash With Parked Truck

Long Beach police said the man may have suffered a medical emergency while driving and lost control of the go-kart before crashing.

LONG BEACH, CA — A homeless man driving a homemade go-kart in Long Beach Tuesday died after crashing into a parked truck, according to the Long Beach Police Department.

Police responded to the area of 68th Way and Belhurst Avenue at about 6:52 p.m. after receiving a report about an injury traffic collision involving a go-kart. When LBPD arrived, officers discovered the go-kart crashed into an unoccupied Chevrolet Silverado.

Paramedics from the Long Beach Fire Department took the man, identified as 51-year-old Rafael Joseph Phillips Jr., to the hospital. Phillips, who police said was experiencing homelessness, was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Preliminary investigation results indicate that Phillips may have suffered a medical emergency while driving and lost control of the vehicle.

"At this time, speed, impaired driving and distracted driving are not considered factors in the collision," LBPD said in a statement.
