🤔 Homelessness Poll!
CNN reports that Los Angeles County has a homeless population of “more than 66,400 people.” The numbers are increasing. Do you think that city governments are doing enough? Are there better solutions? Please let me know your thoughts! So far, 27.6% favor more infrastructure investment, 16% want federal involvement, 2% say faith-based groups need to step up, 5% want the military to open its bases, and 47.5% ask for justice system involvement.

📰 Here are the top five stories today in Long Beach:

1) The City Council denied JP23 at 110 East Broadway a business license. We talked in March about the nightclub that had gotten off to a rocky start, “following nine misdemeanor citations and two notices of violations since September.” On Tuesday, council members heard from neighbors who want to see the Broadway and Pine venue shut down. They also heard from employees who said they need to earn a living. It is interesting to note that this decision was made after “a neutral hearing officer ruled that JP23 should be granted its license.” (Patch, Long Beach Post)

2) Another City Council decision involved the hiring of a full-time food truck program coordinator. At Tuesday’s meeting, critics of the food truck presence at The Pike Outlets asserted that “food trucks go and prey on people waiting in long lines” at brick-and-mortar businesses. “The Pike wouldn’t be what it is now if it wasn’t for us food trucks,” a food truck owner explained. Vice Mayor Rex Richardson framed the council’s decision by stating that the food trucks “are businesses, and I think we need to respect that and understand that food trucks really add to the character of our city.” The coordinator position would help create equity and ensure that ordinances are enforced uniformly. (Press-Telegram)

3) Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón announced Tuesday that charges would be filed against recent LB kidnapping suspects. On Saturday, two Los Angeles residents attempted to kidnap a baby at Pine and 10th Street. The PD located the suspects in the evening in “the 400 block of South Occidental Avenue in the City of Los Angeles.” Suspects are charged “with one count each of attempted kidnapping of a victim under the age of 14, and two counts each of assault with a deadly weapon and child abuse under circumstances likely to cause great bodily injury or death.” The female suspect also faces “two counts of criminal threats.” An arraignment may take place as early as Wednesday. (LBPD, LADA)

4) The city is offering a free Master Composter Recycler Program (MCR). It is an eight-week exploration of “waste reduction, recycling and composting” via lectures and hands-on learning. “Community members who complete the program by attending at least 7 of the 8 required courses and completing the 25 required volunteer hours will be certified as Master Composter Recyclers.” Apply by September 11. The program begins September 24 and runs through November 5. (City of LB)

5) Mark your calendars! Friday is National Dog Day and Krispy Kreme will be offering Doggie Doughnuts! These dog treats are made of human-grade, dog-safe ingredients that imitate the great looks of Original Glazed or Strawberry Sprinkles treats. Sales begin on Friday and will continue while supplies last. (Krispy Kreme)
