CNN reports that Los Angeles County has a homeless population of “more than 66,400 people.” The numbers are increasing. Do you think that city governments are doing enough? Are there better solutions? Please let me know your thoughts! So far, 29.4% favor more infrastructure investment, 15.9% want federal involvement, 1.8% say faith-based groups need to step up, 4.7% want the military to open its bases, and 46.5% ask for justice system involvement.

📰 Here are the top stories in Long Beach today:

1) A non-fatal stabbing on Friday evening around 11:27 p.m. turned out to be a domestic violence call. The LBPD arrived at the 1000 block of Obispo Avenue, where they found a woman with a stab wound and a 36-year-old male suspect. He was “booked for one count of inflicting corporal injury on a spouse/cohabitant and one count of petty theft regarding a previous warrant. Bail was set at $57,000.” (LBPD)

2) Residents love pickleball so much that the city has devised a “new Pickleball Master Plan.” Right now, there’s only one dedicated court in Belmont Shore at Bayshore Park. The city “formed a pickleball advisory group” and the results are in. “Short-term suggestions include adding dual-stripped courts in Bayshore, Marina Vista and Somerset parks, while long-term plans include building a dedicated pickleball complex in an unused area near the Billie Jean King Tennis Center for $450,000 from the city’s Measure A funds.” However, there is no word yet on a date for a groundbreaking. (Long Beach Post)

3) Monkeypox continues to spread. We learned on Friday that there are now “more than 1,100 confirmed cases in L.A. County, Long Beach and Pasadena.” In Long Beach specifically, there are 53 cases as of Friday. Concurrently, there are an additional 29,000 does of the vaccine. If you want to receive a dose, please register online. Walk-up vaccines are not available. (KTLA, Health Department)

4) The popular Michelle Obama Neighborhood Library will be getting “$250,000 in federal funding to expand early childhood education.” Since opening in 2016, this library has consistently put on events for children and adults. “Kids and families that are coming here speak all languages – Spanish, Khmer, Tagalog.” The funds will be put to good use for programs such as improving childhood literacy. (Press-Telegram)

5) Mark your calendars! The fourth annual Ranchos Walk is on! Scheduled for September 10, it is a “free urban hike, where participants will take a stroll through local history as they follow a path that links Rancho Los Alamitos and Rancho Los Cerritos via the summit of Signal Hill.” It is a 9.4-mile hike that starts at 8 a.m. If this is a little much, choose the “shorter 3.5-mile and 6-mile segments, starting from Willow Springs Park and Reservoir Hill, respectively.” (City of LB)
