📰 Here are the top five stories today in Long Beach:
1) What has the LBPD been up to the last couple of days? On Thursday, there was a no-hit shooting in “the 2000 block of West Spring Street.” Someone took some shots at an unoccupied car. On Friday, there was a non-fatal stabbing in “the 5300 block of East Ocean Boulevard.” “The victim and suspect were engaged in a dispute, which resulted in the stabbing.” (LBPD, 2)
2) Who’s targeting Fluffy's Sno-Balls at 1208 Long Beach Boulevard? We talked last month about the business that has been repeatedly targeted by vandals. So far, “vandals have twice broken the shop’s glass door, a woman once tried to damage other property at the store, and a man wielding a lighter and an aerosol can even threatened to set the co-owner on fire.” On Monday, the store was hit again at 7:47 a.m., and for three hours, “pedestrians and cars passed by, but no one called police about the broken window.” (Patch, The HiLo)
3) Friday morning’s high tide was a wake-up call to officials. The remnants of the Baja California hurricane are affecting local sand berms along the Peninsula. Crews went to work shoring up berms to get ready for the next tide. A resident living “between 64th and 65th places along Ocean Boulevard” found “water and mud in her front and back yards” with damage to some fencing. Some residents are readying sandbags to protect doorways against the tide. (Long Beach Post)
4) The temporary Bay Shore Avenue closure ends on September 15. “There's just one more week to enjoy Bay Shore Avenue while it remains open to pedestrians and bicyclists.” To get there, use the “beach path and bike routes along Appian Way, 2nd Street and Ocean Avenue.” (Go Active LB)
5) Mark your calendars! The Beach Streets Open Street event returns on September 17 after a two-year break. Running from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., it will “span neighborhoods from Atherton Street up to Spring Street” and feature “entertainment hubs along the route, including a dedicated children’s area at Whaley Park, as well as outdoor music, food and drink specials, activities and more.” For motorists, this means road closures and dedicated crossing locations at Bellflower and Stearns, Willow and Los Coyotes, Spring and Woodruff and Spring and Palo Verde. (City of Long Beach)
