📰 Here are the top stories today in Long Beach:
1) The LBPD responded to more shootings on Monday. One took place at 1:44 a.m. at the “intersection of Crystal Court and 8th Street.” There was evidence of a shooting but no victim or suspect. Another shooting occurred at 8:23 p.m. in the 800 block of East 19th Street. While they didn’t find any victim, they determined that “two male suspects both discharged firearms from a vehicle and fled the scene.” (LBPD)
2) There is an effort underway to make downtown’s Lincoln Park a family-friendly environment. We learned on Tuesday that “a partnership of public and private organizations has vowed to keep the rebuilt Lincoln Park downtown filled with activities to keep the area vibrant.” Since its reopening in February, there have been few organized events at the location. If you haven’t been, you’re missing out. There’s a “playground, a skate park, a half-court basketball court, a dog park and the library on the north side.” One event is already scheduled for Sunday and consists of an art festival and concert. In the future, there will be “dog obedience classes; Zumba classes; storytimes on the library terrace; monthly picnics in the park with music, food trucks and games; and other family-friendly gatherings.” (Press-Telegram)
3) If you’re between the ages of 16 and 65, have a peanut allergy, and want to participate in a medication trial, please take note! We learned on Monday that COUR Pharmaceuticals is opening a study for CNP-201, “a biodegradable nanoparticle encapsulating peanut protein” that could reduce “the need for strict peanut avoidance and reducing the potentially fatal health risks associated with peanut allergy.” (Long Beach Post)
4) If you’re a teacher, get your school ID ready and head to Dunkin’ Donuts on Thursday! The chain is celebrating back-to-school with a free cup of coffee for educators. “Teachers play an invaluable role in our communities and help provide their students with the means for a better future,” a company representative explained. There are locations at 5560 East 7th Street and 3861 North Lakewood Blvd. (Patch)
5) Mark your calendars! The Long Beach Playhouse is hosting a fundraiser on September 9 at 6 p.m. It takes the form of a “Radio Hour at the offices of Keesal Young and Logan” on the 14th floor of 400 Oceangate. Participants include Doug Haubert, Justin Rudd, and a number of local politicians. It promises to be an evening of wit and fun. (Broadway World)
