🤔 Homelessness Poll!
CNN reports that Los Angeles County has a homeless population of “more than 66,400 people.” The numbers are increasing. Do you think that city governments are doing enough? Are there better solutions? Please let me know your thoughts! So far, 28.6% favor more infrastructure investment, 15.9% want federal involvement, 2.2% say faith-based groups need to step up, 4.9% want the military to open its bases, and 46.7% ask for justice system involvement.
📰 Here are the top five stories in Long Beach today:
1) The LBPD was called to Pine Avenue and PCH on Sunday at 1:07 a.m. A security guard reported hearing gunshots. “He then saw a dark-colored vehicle driving in an unknown direction at a high-rate of speed. No injuries were reported.” (LBPD)
2) What’ll it take to get a concealed firearm permit in the city? In the past, you would hand your applications to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. However, we learned on Monday that as of August 1, it is no longer handling this process for Long Beach. The city is now scrambling “to develop its own screening process.” One sticky issue is the requirement of an applicant to “show good moral character.” How, exactly, should the LBPD interpret this? (LB Post)
3) There was a fatal traffic accident on Monday at 1:41 a.m. A 2013 Mitsubishi Outlander struck and killed a woman “walking in lanes of traffic at East 7th Street and Campus Drive.” The driver remained on the scene. The LBPD notes that “at this time neither alcohol, drugs, nor distracted driving is believed to be a factor in the collision.” (LBPD)
4) Utilities will resume charging late fees, turning off services to non-paying customers and referring delinquent accounts to collections. In a Friday memo, utilities explained it does so to “avoid recoupment from remaining customers through higher rates.” By October 1, commercial accounts will be turned off. This affects about 306 customers. Residential shut-offs begin March 1 and could affect 12,000 customers. (City of LB)
5) Mark your calendars! Long Beach Walls, the International Mural Festival, is returning! Scheduled to run from August 29 to September 4, there’ll be “24/7 viewing of mural art, food tasting, bike tours and a KCRW Summer Nights Closing Party complete with headlining DJs from the station's top female radio personalities.” (LB Local News)
