📰 Here are the top five stories today in Long Beach:

1) What has the LBPD been up to this weekend? It’s fair to say they were busy. On Saturday evening, there was a shooting in “the 100 block of East Pacific Coast Highway,” but the victim is uncooperative. Sunday morning, officers arrested a 33-year-old Lancaster man who allegedly fired into the air in the “400 block of Nebraska Avenue.” Officers also met up with a group of juveniles in the “100 block of South Pine Avenue.” Two young men were arrested on gun charges; “one firearm was determined to be an unserialized Polymer 80 firearm and one firearm was an unregistered Glock.” On Monday morning, they connected with a man who said he was shot “in the 5200 block of East Ocean Boulevard.” (LBPD, 2)

2) Christian Outreach in Action (COA) is bad for business – if you believe the people behind a petition. We learned on Sunday that a group criticizes the organization at 3rd Street and Linden Avenue for “an increase in crime, violence, drug use, yelling, loitering, trash, urine and public defecation near their residences and business.” For the last 40 years, COA has served hot meals, offered clothes and other services to the homeless at that location. According to the petition, “providing food on a daily basis is to blame for the increase in delinquency near the area.” Proponents of COA’s activities say that the problem is the 62% increase in homelessness in Long Beach. (Long Beach Post)

3) Has Mother Nature put Long Beach on broil and forgotten to turn off the oven? As of Sunday, the City reached record temperatures, measured at the airport, of 109 degrees. “The National Weather Service said the previous record for the date was 107, set in 1988.” Hand in hand with this heat are the Flex alerts that urge residents to refrain from powering appliances between 4 p.m. and 10 p.m. So far, we have had six Flex Alerts back to back. By the way, beginning today is also the request to stop watering your landscape altogether until Sept. 20. (ABC, Patch)

4) Canvassing season is beginning! City Council member Rex Richardson, who is a candidate for mayor, announced his campaign canvass launch on September 10. He encourages supporters to “join our growing movement to knock on doors and get our community excited for the upcoming election!” The launch takes place at 10:30 a.m. at 295 East 4th Street. (Rex Richardson)

5) Mark your calendars! Long Beach is getting a Zankou Chicken on the corner of Lakewood and Willow! The company announced on Saturday that the venue will go in “next to the new Starbucks” some time in January or February 2023. If you are unfamiliar with the brand, its garlic spread is so popular that there are specific rules for customers wanting extra! (Zankou Chicken)
