📰 Here are the top five stories today in Long Beach:
1) Shoutout to Susan Watson! After having “taught Japanese at Long Beach Poly High School for the last 13 years,” she has been named the California Language Teachers Association Teacher of the Year! We learned on Saturday that she was previously “named a CLTA Outstanding Teacher in 2016 and the 2016-17 LA County Teacher of the Year.” Congratulations! (Long Beach Post)
2) An affordable 76-unit housing development is coming to 3590 East Pacific Coast Highway. Saturday’s report noted that Farmers & Merchants Bank “partnered with Harbor Interfaith Services and Excelerate Housing Group” to create the project named 26 Point 2. Groundbreaking is expected to take place in February and completion in December 2023. (Press-Telegram)
3) Long Beach, which has been put on broil by Mother Nature for the last week, got some rain showers on Friday. Remnants of Hurricane Kay brought much-needed water to the area. However, “at the 72nd Place lifeguard station, access to the peninsula was closed off Friday night, as rainwater came onto the streets.” Crews anticipated high tides and worked on shoring up berms. “This is the closest it has come to flooding in nearly two decades,” residents said on Saturday. (CBS)
4) Have you been to veteran-owned Got A Leaf at 5263 Atlantic Avenue? Open since June, we learned on Thursday that this plant shop “features amenities such as a make-your-own soil bar and a ‘plant hospital’ for ailing plants.” “A lot of thought goes into Got A Leaf’s inventory. Its current selection of plants includes a 22-year-old, 6-foot-high money tree and a couple of rare acacia.” Check it out! (The Signal Tribune)
5) Today is the 21st anniversary of 9/11. “We will observe a citywide moment of silence at 9:11 a.m., on Sunday, Sept. 11, 2022, in honor and remembrance of the lives of those who were lost. (City of Long Beach)
