📰 Here are the top five stories in Long Beach today:
1) On Tuesday, the LBPD investigated two reported stabbings. The first one occurred at 10:04 p.m. in the 2100 block of Spaulding Street. Officers met a man with stab wounds who “attempted to break up a dispute between multiple subjects.” The second incident took officers to the 200 block of West Pacific Coast Highway. There, the victim said he “got into a dispute with a male adult suspect, resulting in the stabbing.” (LBPD)
2) A traffic fatality occurred Wednesday morning at 4:49 a.m. at the intersection of Paramount Boulevard and Coolidge Street. A driver hit a pedestrian. The driver remained on the scene. “LBPD has publicly reported 30 traffic fatalities so far this year; 16 have involved the death of a pedestrian.” (Long Beach Post)
3) We learned on Wednesday that the Channel Deepening Project at the Long Beach Port is progressing, although not yet guaranteed. The Army Corps of Engineers has given “the green light to federal participation,” which is instrumental for funding. Proposed improvements include deepening of several channels through dredging. The last time the port deepened some of its channels was in 2014. (Port Technology)
4) Monday is Labor Day and this means closures of city facilities. Street sweeping, library services, the utility call center and swimming pools are among the services that will be closed. However, city parks, trash collection, and emergency utility dispatch will be among the services that are open. (City of LB)
5) Mark your calendars! Saturday is National Cinema Day. See every movie, at every showtime, in every format for $3. So, head on over to Cinemark, Regal Edwards, AMC, and other venues. Even if you aren’t a go-to-the-movies kind of person, remember that they have air conditioning, which is going to be in high demand this weekend. (National Cinema Day)
