Suspect In Double Fatal Hit-And-Run Linked To Another Fatal Long Beach Crash: Police

The 24-year-old was arrested after turning herself in to police, according to the department.

LONG BEACH, CA — A suspect arrested in a Sunday hit-and-run that left a man and woman dead is also accused of being a driver in a separate fatal crash months earlier, Long Beach police announced Friday.

Ahkeyajahnique Owens, 24, of Long Beach, was arrested after she turned herself in to police on Wednesday, the Long Beach Police Department said.

“Using forensic evidence and video footage,” police said their detectives identified one driver and a single car involved in a fatal crash from October and the hit-and-run earlier this week.

Owens is accused of hitting a bicyclist, 35-year-old Raul Augustin Gallopa, near East 4th Street and Bonito Avenue on Oct. 6 as he tried to make a northbound turn, police said.

At the time of the crash, Owens remained at the scene and was arrested for reckless driving, according to police.

Owens is also accused of being the driver in a Sunday fatal hit-and-run involving three cars at Sixth Street and Atlantic Avenue, police said.

When officers arrived Sunday, they found an unresponsive female passenger of a Nissan lying on the roadway and an unresponsive male passenger on the sidewalk, police said.

Officers tried to help the pair until Long Beach Fire Department rescuers arrived and declared them dead on scene, according to police.

The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the two killed in the crash at Sixth Street and Atlantic Avenue as Bobbi Smith, 24, and Gilberto Lopez, 21.

The driver of a Kia and the driver and front passenger of the Nissan were all taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

Initial investigation showed that an orange 2021 BMW 330i was driving east down East 6th Street when it ran a red light and entered the intersection at Atlantic Avenue, police said.

The BMW hit a Nissan Altima driving south on Atlantic Avenue through the intersection, then continued east and struck a black 2017 Kia Soul traveling north through the intersection, according to police.

After the crash, the BMW's driver fled, police said.

Owens was booked into jail on a felony count of vehicular manslaughter stemming from the October 2025 traffic collision, police said.

Detectives presented the October case to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office, police said, adding that detectives will present a separate case from the January hit-and-run to prosecutors next week.

Owens is being held on $200,000 bail, according to police.
