📰 Here are the top stories today in Long Beach:

1) Who toppled 12 headstones at Sunnyside Cemetery? Vandals struck Thursday night or in the early morning hours of Friday. Cemetery workers believe they will be able to put the stones back up that mark the final resting places of “residents who died as early as 1913 and as late as 1965.” (LB Post)

2) There was a no-hit shooting in the area of the 1300 block of East 15th Street. The LBPD was called to the area Sunday night around 9:40 p.m. Officers found “evidence in the area indicating a shooting had occurred, including casings and several residences that had been struck by gunfire.” An occupied car also showed signs of being struck. (LBPD)

3) Mayor Robert Garcia announced Monday afternoon that he tested positive for COVID. “I have light symptoms and otherwise feel fine. I plan to rest and work from home this week. Grateful to be vaccinated and boosted,” he informed followers on Twitter. And while most wished him a speedy recovery, some posters could not help themselves but turn the announcement into an opportunity for political posturing. (Robert Garcia)

4) The city announced Monday that it partnered with the school district to launch the Space Beach Teacher Externship Program. It provides “a professional development program for K-12 educators to create streamlined, easy-to-navigate career pathways for students interested in aerospace and related industries.” The program officially began August 9, and 16 LBUSD teachers “participated in workshops with industry leaders, engaged in discussions on workforce and existing needs, and had the opportunity to gain hands-on experience that will help educators contextualize the academic content they teach.” “Cabrillo High School, California Academy of Math and Science (CAMS) and Sato Academy,” in particular, are instrumental in creating the student readiness.
