📰 Here are the top stories today in Long Beach:
1) The LBPD dealt with several shootings this weekend. One occurred on Sunday at 2:33 a.m. near East 7th Street and Park Avenue. Road rage resulted in shots fired and a 48-year-old man is under arrest. At 9:24 p.m., there were reports of shots fired “near the 1900 block of Pine Avenue.” On Sunday morning, right around 7:04 a.m., someone shot at a woman in the 1600 block of Pine Avenue. (LBPD, 2)
2) Sunnyside Cemetery Vandalism Update: Last week, we discussed vandals toppling 12 headstones at the cemetery. A Thursday report highlights that “city workers had returned the blocks – some perhaps weighing 500 pounds – back upright and secured them with epoxy.” Visitors suggest that the vandals may have entered near the front entrance, where there’s an interruption in the barbed wire surrounding the cemetery. (Patch, Beachcomber)
3) Mercedes-Benz has opened a classic car center at 3860 North Lakewood Boulevard. We learned Saturday that it is the second-biggest classic car center after the German Stuttgart venue. The facility takes up the 40,000-square-foot former McDonnell-Douglas factory. “The center has parts for pretty much every car they've ever made and if they don't have a particular part, they have the engineering drawings going back decades, and they can have the part made.” (ABC)
4) The Long Beach Comic Con is scheduled for Labor Day weekend. For fans, it means an opportunity to visit the Long Beach Convention Center and enjoy “hundreds of vendors . . . on site selling and displaying all kinds of comic-related items, while artists, writers and even actors host fan meet-and-greets and sign memorabilia.” For anyone else, it means a fantastic look as cosplayers all over DTLB. (Press-Telegram)
5) Mark your calendars! One of the city’s best-kept secrets is Tai Chi in the Park with Dr. Hoover. It starts on Sundays at 9:30 a.m. at Heartwell Park by the lake. Even though the group is working on Yang Style Tai Chi Chuan form set 24, beginners get the hang quickly. “Everyone is welcome, including children and seniors.” (Insider tip: wear sunglasses or a hat.) Did I mention that it’s free? (Meetup)
