Here are the top five stories in Los Angeles today:
- We learned on Wednesday why out of 8,200 bus stops there are only 1,870 bus shelters, leaving riders in the blazing sun. The companies charged with providing the shelters cite “an arduous permit approval process and public backlash over advertising.” “To be approved, each shelter has to go through a 16-step process involving eight different city agencies, including the LAPD, LADWP and LADOT. Each city council district also has to sign off on the permit,” which has resulted in permit requests sitting “in limbo for 1,000 days, 2,000 days, but nobody wants to approve it [and] nobody wants to deny it.” (KCET)
- In March, we discussed the plans to turn the Viper Room property into a 12-story high-rise. The announcement was made on Wednesday that the developer had received a $62 million loan. “Along with the planned Viper Room revamp, plans include a five-star hotel, a couple of dozen luxury condos, restaurants, and retail space.” The plan is to start work next year and finish in 2025. (Patch, The Real Deal)
- The 19-year-old suspect, said to have been involved in shooting and robbing Lady Gaga's dog walker, was erroneously released on April 6. On Wednesday, he was recaptured on Apricot Drive in Palmdale. “The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said it teamed up with the United States Marshal Service to search for Jackson after his release.” (Fox)
- The City Council voted on Wednesday to increase rates for private ambulance services. “Several representatives of private ambulance companies told a Transportation Committee meeting in May that the increases are sorely needed for an industry that is facing staffing shortages and wage increases.” The new rates will be “based on an 18.5% increase in the Consumer Price Index for transportation and medical care services in the Southern California region since 2016.” (Patch)
- Mark your calendars! WrestleMania 39 has scheduled its launch party for August 11 at the SoFi Stadium! Admission is free, and there will be “live in-ring matches and interviews with WWE Superstars, celebrity appearances, official WWE merchandise and more.” Celebs that you might rub elbows with include Snoop Dogg, Fluffy, The Miz and Dominik Mysterio.
