Teen Kills 12-Year-Old LA County Boy In Playground Shooting: Police

A teenage boy is in custody after fatally shooting a 12-year-old at a playground, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.

COMPTON, CA — A 17-year-old boy was arrested Sunday on suspicion of killing a 12-year-old boy at a park in Compton on Friday, according to authorities.

Deputies found the boy at Fig/Oleander Park at around 4 p.m. Friday and began issuing first aid. Paramedics transported him to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced dead, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.

The suspect was described at the time as wearing all black, including a ski mask. He fled northbound on Oleander Avenue, deputies said.

Investigators later identified the suspect as a 17-year-old boy, based on unspecified evidence collected from the scene. Deputies issued a warrant for the boy, who was taken into custody in Los Angeles at around 10 a.m. Sunday, the LASD said.

He is being held at a juvenile detention facility.

Residents who live near the playground said the boy who was killed often spent time at the park. They said he was a student at Davis Middle School, KCAL reported.
