Here are the top five stories today in Los Angeles:
- Activists interrupted Tuesday’s City Council meeting. At issue was “a vote to expand an anti-camping ordinance to all schools and most daycares. City business is at a standstill as LAPD calls more officers to City Hall.” The LAPD was asked to remove about 70 protesters from the chambers. (Kate Cagle)
- It is up to Governor Gavin Newsom to decide if Los Angeles will be one of three cities “to provide supervised injection sites . . . where people can consume pre-obtained drugs with provided clean needles.” If there is an overdose, attendants with Narcan will step in. Passed by the state Senate on Monday, 21-11, the bill now sits on his desk. (ABC)
- The LA Unified School District is working to get ahead of chronic absenteeism. A Tuesday report reveals that “more than half of LAUSD were chronically absent last year,” which translates to more than 200,000 learners. Experts found that “chronically absent students have had to stay home with their siblings, get jobs, or simply cannot find transportation to school.” (LA School Report)
- There are 40 ice cream shops in the United States that critics have voted to be the best in the nation. In the state, there are four. We learned on Tuesday that Los Angeles has two of them. They are Awan, which “specializes in non-dairy ice cream using Indonesian roots,” and Wanderlust Creamery, where “flavors are inspired by a combination of desserts from Thailand, Vietnam, the Philippines and France.” (Patch)
- Mark your calendars! KCON is coming to the L.A. Convention Center on August 19 through the 21st. “Explore K-Pop, K-Beauty, K-Food, and beyond through engaging panels, an expo overflowing with innovative products (and idol appearances!), KCON-exclusive programs, and artist engagements.” (LACC)
