📰 Here are the top five stories in Los Angeles today:
1) Would you believe that someone had a huge mosaic of Medusa in their climate-controlled Los Angeles storage unit? There since the 1980s, the owner, who didn’t have any paperwork, finally had an attorney contact the FBI Art Crime Team to negotiate the return. We learned on Sunday that Italian authorities confirmed that the mosaic “had been entered into cultural property records in 1909.” In 1959, it was for sale in L.A. The 2,000-year-old mosaic “had been cut into 16 pieces” and stored on pallets that showed evidence of termite infestation. (CNN)
2) What’s going on with the Los Angeles Aerial Rapid Transit project of the “aerial gondola tram to whisk people to Dodger Stadium?” Headed by Frank McCourt, the former team owner, the company donated the project to “downtown-based Climate Resolve.” Monday’s report shows that while McCourt’s company will fund the entitlement phase, the environmental nonprofit created a subsidiary, Zero Emissions Transit, to take “the project through the entitlement process and then assembling the funding package and managing the construction phase.” Once built, the tram could move about 5,000 people an hour. (LA Business Journal/paywall)
3) The parking lot across “Mission Road from Lincoln Park” could become a “seven-story, 184-unit apartment complex,” if the Planning Department approves the developer’s request to increase density but decrease parking spaces and open areas. In return, the 3601 Mission Road project would set aside 47 units “for very low-income households.” (The Eastsider LA)
4) If you’re planning to travel “between Lake Hughes Road and Templin Highway,” be aware of the I-5 closures! On Monday, Caltrans sent structural engineers to inspect fire damage. “Steel barriers on the wall were burned by flames.” (NBC)
5) Canyon Coffee has a brick-and-mortar storefront! Located at 1559 Echo Park Avenue, we found out on Monday that “the café will soon host pop-ups by night featuring other local food and beverage businesses.” There’s also talk about an expansion that will culminate in a move to a new production space.
