🤔 Homelessness Poll!
CNN reports that Los Angeles County has a homeless population of “more than 66,400 people.” The numbers are increasing. Do you think that city governments are doing enough? Are there better solutions? Please let me know your thoughts! So far, 28.6% favor more infrastructure investment, 15.9% want federal involvement, 2.2% say faith-based groups need to step up, 4.9% want the military to open its bases, and 46.7% ask for justice system involvement.

📰 Here are the top five stories in Los Angeles today:

1) C.Y. Flooring, a DTLA business, caught fire on Sunday. The LAFD responded to the blaze at 1228 South Compton Avenue at 2:57 a.m. “As fire swept through the main building and into an annex, firefighters were forced to transition to defensive operations, successfully preventing fire from consuming the firm's office space or damaging a pair of immediately adjacent industrial buildings.” It took 150 firefighters 83 minutes to gain control of the flames. (LAFD)

2) Los Angeles City Councilmember Kevin DeLeon wants “pedestrian-centric superblocks" like the ones in Barcelona. A Monday report explains that the pilot program idea has been referred to the Transportation Committee and, once approved, might begin “somewhere in District 14.” A Barcelona superblock is a 2016 development that transformed “70% of street surface area into public use spaces.” It’s a great option for pedestrians and cyclists but closes streets to cars. Los Angeles Walks and Move L.A. support the plan. (Yo! Venice!)

3) The multifamily property including 4220 Santa Rosalia Drive and 4318 Santo Tomas Drive changed hands. We learned on Monday that Upside Investments sold the Baldwin Hills property to Avanath Capital Management for $220 million. “With more than one million square feet of land, the future of this unique asset will serve as a model for large-scale housing in the city,” a Northmarq adviser explained. (Commercial Observer)

4) On Sunday morning, the L.A. County FD Lifeguard Division did a community paddle-out in honor of Derek Traeger. The Royal Palms Beach event in San Pedro was a fitting way to “celebrate the life of a great waterman.” (Lifeguard Division)

5) Mark your calendars! There’s a 70s Disco Swim Night at The Tropicana Pool! Scheduled for Wednesday, it’ll run from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. DJ Jena Red is in charge of spinning the memories. By the way, there’s going to be a 70s cocktail menu! (The Hollywood Roosevelt)

  • The failure to protect West L.A.'s Chili Bowl was a blow to the legacy of programmatic architecture in Los Angeles. Wednesday, learn from CD 11 candidates about how they view the role of the council office in protecting rare and historic buildings. (Los Angeles Conservancy via Facebook)
  • The Los Angeles Fire Department and NHTSA remind you: 🏫 Millions of kids are headed back to school around the country! 🚘 Drivers: Always be on the lookout for pedestrians and cyclists, especially in the mornings & afternoons. (Los Angeles Fire Department via Facebook)
  • Our Eagle Rock North neighbor is looking for a roofer who can replace a few damaged areas of a roof. If you have had a good experience with a roofer, please let them know. (Nextdoor)

  • Coffee with a Cop LAPD from the Hollywood Division is today at 9 a.m. at Starbucks on Hollywood/McCadden. (Nextdoor)
