🤔 Homelessness Poll!
CNN reports that Los Angeles County has a homeless population of “more than 66,400 people.” The numbers are increasing. Do you think that city governments are doing enough? Are there better solutions? Please let me know your thoughts! So far, 29.4% favor more infrastructure investment, 15.9% want federal involvement, 1.8% say faith-based groups need to step up, 4.7% want the military to open its bases, and 46.5% ask for justice system involvement.
📰 Here are the top five stories in Los Angeles today:
1) The West Hollywood Sheriff’s Station investigated a structure fire on Saturday. They were “at the 1300 block of N Laurel Avenue” conducting evacuations. We learned later that the “structure fire appears to have been accidental” and the building “is now safe.” (WHDLASD)
2) On Friday evening, a Lincoln Heights homeowner protected himself with a gun when a 30-year-old man “lunged at him with a knife while he was in the front yard of his home.” He then called LAPD to come to the 500 block of East Avenue 28. The assailant “was pronounced dead at the scene” and the homeowner “was not arrested.” (The Eastsider LA)
3) Windsor Hills Crash Update: We learned Saturday that the traveling nurse, who is the suspect in the crash that killed six people, “has been suspended from practicing nursing in the state of California.” According to the defense, she has had mental health issues “which appear to be increasing in severity, ranging from the defendant jumping on police cars to jumping out of apartment windows.” Besides that, she was involuntarily committed to mental health facilities. It is interesting to note that the California Board of Registered Nursing explained they initially granted her license because the nurse “did not have a criminal history or a record of discipline that would have precluded her from obtaining licensure; and, the BRN did not have any information calling her mental state into question.” (Fox)
4) Who will remain with the Los Angeles Rams for the season? We learned on Saturday that there have been five cuts made. They are “tight end Kendall Blanton, running backs Raymond Calais and A.J. Rose, defensive back Jairon McVea and wide receiver J.J. Koski.” However, all is not lost. “It wouldn't be much of a surprise to see any one of these players end up back on the Rams practice squad this year.” (The Spun)
5) The Channel Street skate park is reopening today! Built in the 2000s under the 110 without the benefit of permits, Caltrans shuttered it in 2014. Behind the scenes, Councilman Joe Buscaino worked with the San Pedro Skate Park Association to make the space legal. Today at noon, it reopens! (Patch)
