Here are the top five stories today in Los Angeles:
- On Wednesday, the Los Angeles City Council voted 11-1, Council member John Lee dissenting, to extend the eviction moratorium that has been ongoing for two years. Landlords are critical, saying they are “caught in the middle, stuck footing a bill they cannot afford.” Proponents argue that “a lot of people still haven't been able to pay the rent, and they're going to end up homeless.” (ABC)
- Council member Mitch O’Farrell announced Thursday that the Hollywood Walk of Fame will get a makeover next summer. There will be “beautifully designed improvements, centered around pedestrians and transit riders.” Examples include bus stop consolidations, street furnishings, and the conversion of the Hollywood Boulevard parking lane into a pedestrian zone between Orange and Gower. (Spectrum News 1)
- The City Council decided on Friday to close the alley, “near the intersection of Slauson Avenue and Crenshaw Boulevard, for up to 18 months.” It is near the scene of rapper Nipsey Hussle’s murder. The LAPD had begun noticing increases in crime since a mural honoring Hussle was “was put up adjacent to the alley.” (Patch)
- Eldridge Industries, a private investment firm, is taking over the Golden Globe Awards. After being dropped by NBC last year and handing out awards in a private ceremony in January, the Golden Globes “will become a private entity separate from the Hollywood Foreign Press Association's charitable and philanthropic programs.” (Spectrum News 1)
- We learned on Friday that Walmart is exploring a new service. The company is now offering L.A. residents InHome, which “allows customers to have groceries and other essentials delivered directly to their doorstep, kitchen or garage refrigerator.” You can sign up for a 30-day trial to have Walmart employees enter your front door or garage “using a one-time access code.” (L.A.
