Ex-SoCal Prep Star, NFL Player Stanley Wilson Jr. Dead At 40: Report

STANFORD, CA — A former Stanford football star and NFL player with a troubled past died at a Southern California psychiatric hospital earlier this month, TMZ Sports reports.

The cause of his death is under investigation, but foul play is not suspected, according to the report.

Wilson is the son of former Cincinnati Bengals running back Stanley Wilson Sr.
Wilson Jr. played defensive back at Stanford for four years (2001-04) and went on to play in the NFL with the Detroit Lions for three seasons (2005-07). A 2008 Achilles injury ended his career.

Wilson Jr. was taken to Metropolitan State after being declared incompetent to stand trial in connection with a vandalism arrest in August in which he was accused of breaking into a Hollywood Hills home twice, the report said. He was accused of taking a bath the fountain after vandalizing the home.
Wilson’s legal troubles follow a series of arrests from 2016-17.
He was shot in the abdomen in an attempted 2016 Portland burglary for which he was charged, and in 2017 he was arrested after being accused of walking naked in Portland and in connection with another attempted burglary, the report said.
Wilson Jr. was born in Oklahoma City in 1982 raised in Carson (Los Angeles County) and attended Bishop Montgomery High School in Torrance.
Wilson Jr. was an All-Pac-10 honorable mention his senior year at Stanford when he had a career-high 54 tackles and returned an interception for 51 yards.
The Lions selected Wilson as a third-round pick (72nd overall) in the 2005 draft.
He had 89 tackles and one forced fumble in three years with the Lions before suffering an Achilles injury during a preseason game against the New York Giants.
