📰 Here are the top stories today in Los Angeles:
- A hit-and-run driver killed a 62-year-old woman at Broadway and 88th Street on Saturday just before 3:30 p.m. Reportedly, she “was getting items out of the back of a car when a car traveling at about 40 mph struck the open door and the victim.” Afterward, the driver didn’t stop but “went through a red light after the crash and sped away from the scene.” On KFI radio, the car was described as a “blue mid-sized sedan with front-end damage.” (NBC)
- A driver hit a structure at 2260 North Cahuenga Boulevard on Sunday just after 8 p.m. Some utility poles were down, and the driver was trapped inside the vehicle. Firefighters arrived and “successfully deconstructed the vehicle with hydraulic rescue tools to free the only patient, an approximately 30-year-old male in critical condition.” (Los Angeles Fire Department, 2)
- The Native American community opposes any plans to taxidermy P-22 and put him on display at the National History Museum. The institution took possession of the animal’s remains on Friday, when “tribal representatives led a blessing ceremony welcoming P-22 back to his homeland.” An acceptable next step would be to give the mountain lion a burial around Griffith Park. You may remember that he settled there “for more than a decade after leaving the Santa Monica Mountains, having crossed two freeways.” The museum announced that “decisions regarding next steps will continue to be made together with local Tribes.” (Yahoo!)
- Camphor at 923 East 3rd Street earned a Michelin star after opening just about a year ago. What impressed the reviewer the most about the venue’s contemporary French cuisine? We learned on Monday that points in its favor were “uber-talented Chefs Max Boonthanakit and Lijo George” and “seriously good French fare with a sprinkle of spicing from Southeast Asia.” Stuffed rigatoni, steak au poivre and the seasonal fruit tart are the dishes to try. (Michelin, Spectrum News 1)
- We set some Christmas Day heat records! While downtown L.A. missed its 85 degrees record set in 1980 by one degree, Woodlands Hills ended up tying “for the record high for Christmas Day with 1985,” which is 84 degrees. Chatsworth topped out at 86 degrees, which is one degree higher than a record set there in 1980. (National Weather Service, Los Angeles)
