📰 Here are the top five stories in Los Angeles today:
1) On Monday afternoon, there were reports of a suspicious device in DTLA. “South Figueroa between 8th and 9th streets had been evacuated, along with a parking structure at 888 S. Figueroa St.” By 7 p.m., officials “cleared” the object and reported that it was “rendered safe.” There is no word about the nature of the item. (Yahoo!News)
2) Gulch Fire Update: As of Tuesday morning, the “brush fire located along San Gabriel Canyon Road near San Gabriel Dam” has grown to an estimated 100 acres. No structures are in the way of the blaze; however, there are some road closures. Moreover, there’s no containment yet. (L.A. County FD)
3) Just in time for the scorching heatwave hitting L.A., the public health department warned residents on Monday to avoid four local beaches. “The Santa Monica Pier, Mother’s Beach in Marina del Rey, inner Cabrillo Beach in San Pedro and Topanga Canyon Beach in Malibu are covered by the Department of Public Health advisory.” Bacterial levels went above safe levels. (L.A. Times/paywall)
4) The Chinese Friends Restaurant at 984 North Broadway closed on Monday for good. The Chinatown venue was a popular non-Cantonese restaurant that fed residents and tourists for 50 years. The owners went out in style, telling patrons that “now it is time for us to close this chapter and enjoy our retirement.” (Eater L.A.)
5) Mark your calendars! There’s a fundraiser on September 10 for Terasaki Budokan at 249 South Los Angeles Street in Little Tokyo. It starts at 5 p.m., features the J-Town Taiko Club, and has the tunes courtesy of Kokoro. “Wear your favorite happi coat, Budokan T-Shirt, basketball jersey, Nisei Week Queen’s outfits, dance clothes, and whatever represents your organization, social group or hobbies.” (Rafu)
