Here are the top five stories in Los Angeles today:

  1. There was a deadly hit-and-run on Vernon and Towne avenues Thursday at around 1:40 a.m. The victim was a “man in his 40s.” “The suspect vehicle was described as a possible black truck.” (CBS)
  2. The LAPD shot and killed a man “near the area of North Broadway and South Avenue 19.” A passerby reported the man as “being armed.” The man “allegedly produced the handgun and pointed it at the officers.” It turns out he had a pellet gun. (Patch)
  3. We learned on Thursday that a mother is suing the Los Angeles Unified School District, alleging “her 13-year-old son was given a COVID-19 vaccination at school without her consent” and asked to forge her signature. The school in question was the Barack Obama Global Preparation Academy. According to the parent, the child “was offered a piece of pizza for receiving the vaccine.” (Patch)
  4. The National Lawyers Guild of Los Angeles announced on Monday that it wants to see the LAPD “held accountable for using violent force against members of the public who attended the demonstrations on June 24 and June 25” in the wake of DTLA reproductive rights protests. The group alleges “LAPD was really getting in people’s faces, manhandling people, pushing and shoving people.” According to the group, the LAPD is signaling “protesters to think twice before demonstrating on the streets of Downtown, or face the risk of injury or arrest.” (LA DT News)
  5. There’s a new contender for your alcohol dollar. L.A. based Sake High! It is a canned sake and was “launched with a mission of increasing inclusivity around sake and disrupting the beverage space of hard seltzers, canned cocktails and filling craft beers.” Thursday’s press release identifies the availability of the “premium Junmai Sake (that) is brewed in Kyoto, Japan.” (BevNet)
