Here are the top five stories today in Los Angeles:
- On Tuesday, the LAPD closed the 6th Street Bridge “until further notice.” After spending $588 million to build it and celebrating its opening on July 10, the PD “has given out 57 citations” in the last four days. And this is just the tip of the iceberg that is “street takeovers, graffiti and crashes.” (Fox)
- On Wednesday, there was a car accident at Washington Boulevard and South Broadway that caused damage to a fire hydrant, which led to water gushing across the intersection. “A woman had broadsided a Lyft with a passenger inside before crashing into the utility box and the fire hydrant. The subsequent crash took out power to the area, which was alongside Metro Blue Line train tracks.” It is unclear how this factors into the story, but the woman “did have a rabbit in the car with her.” There were no arrests. (CBS)
- On Wednesday, the Los Angeles City Council delayed its vote on “an ordinance that would ban homeless encampments within 500 feet of schools and daycare centers.” Council members will look at it again on Tuesday. (Spectrum News 1)
- The Banning, a 64-unit building, celebrated its groundbreaking on Tuesday. The venue will be at 841 North Banning Boulevard and “dedicated to chronically homeless individuals and families.” Funding for the project comes from “Measure HHH and No Place Like Home (NPLH).” (HACLA)
- We’re number 2 — and 5! Ranking the nation’s best hospitals identify Cedars-Sinai Medical Center as second after the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. In fifth place was UCLA Medical Center, which was tied with Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore. (U.S. News)
