📰 Here are the top five stories in Los Angeles today:
1) The Los Angeles Unified School District announced Monday that it was targeted by a ransomware attack. Experts “detected unusual activity in its Information Technology systems over the weekend, which, after initial review, can be confirmed as an external cyberattack on our Information Technology assets.” The district advises that operations may be modified but will continue. While we don’t know if the district paid the ransom, we do know that the White House has mobilized the FBI and Homeland Security to assist with the issue. (LAUSD, KTLA)
2) On Monday afternoon, there was a commercial building fire at 2843 East 11th Street. It took “more than 180 firefighters to the scene along with 19 engines and 13 trucks” two hours to put out the flames. The fire destroyed several businesses and injured four firefighters. (The Easter LA)
3) There was a shooting outside the JW Marriott hotel in the 800 block of West Olympic Boulevard just before 5 a.m. on Tuesday. Three white or Hispanic male suspects then got away in a “white Rolls-Royce SUV.” (KTLA)
4) UCLA and USC are putting rivalries aside to come together for Serve LA on September 24. “Between the UCLA and USC volunteer centers, service opportunities will take place across Los Angeles County, and through alumni networks from the Conejo Valley to Vietnam. Students, staff, faculty, alumni, parents and neighbors are invited to sign up for any project that appeals to them.” (UCLA)
5) Mark your calendars! The VA Greater Los Angeles will host its “First Annual Hispanic Heritage Month Wellness Fair on Sept. 22 at 11 a.m.” Visit the location at 11301 Wilshire Boulevard and head to the Wadsworth Theatre Parking Lot No. 7. “Come learn about the services provided at the VA, get education on health concerns, veteran benefits, and much more!” (Los Angeles VA)
