📰 Here are the top five stories today in Los Angeles:
1) Shoutout to Los Angeles residents Samuel Biner, Greg Griffin and Kevin Griffin of Westchester-based Troop 927 who received the Eagle Scout Award on August 6. We learned on Thursday that Biner “led the design and building of several buddy benches for Westchester Lutheran Church’s elementary and middle school campus.” Greg “managed Scouts constructing wood benches for Fort MacArthur Museum in San Pedro” while Kevin “chose to develop and construct a memorial honoring a pilot killed in action during the Vietnam War.” Congratulations! (Culver City Observer)
2) An argument turned deadly in DTLA on Thursday. A man shot another “around 6:45 p.m. in the 700 block of S. Spring Street.” Both suspect and victim are believed to be in their 30s. (ABC)
3) A lithium battery charger may have caused a fire “at the Veterans Administration’s West Los Angeles Campus at 11301 W. Wilshire Boulevard” on Friday morning around 1 a.m. It destroyed 15 tiny homes where homeless veterans were staying. Nobody was hurt. Some reports claim that “firefighters faced challenges knocking down the blaze because there are allegedly a limited number of fire hydrants on the property.” (KTLA, Fox)
4) Last year in June, the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors voted to close the Men’s Central Jail at 441 Bauchet Street. As of Friday, there is still no timeline for the closure. However, officials say they do have a “roadmap.” Sheriff Alex Villanueva opposed the closure. “The jail has been plagued with recent problems, including cramped conditions and inmate deaths.” (Spectrum News 1)
5) P&Y Broadcasting, the owner of Radio Korea, listed its 38-acre El Sereno property for sale. We learned on Tuesday that the undeveloped land is zoned for agricultural use. The property at 4600 Carter Drive, except for the “multiple radio towers” and “area immediately surrounding them” can be yours for $38 million. (The Real Deal)
