New Year’s Resolutions Poll! 🎶
According to Forbes, only 8% of people making New Year’s resolutions actually achieve them. Even so, the experts suggest making resolutions because they encourage intentionality, optimism, and a positive effect on others. So, what are your resolutions for 2023? So far, 20% intend to meet new people or interact more with current friends. Letting go of negativity is the goal for 15%, and 10% want to travel or experience something new. Another 30% want to live healthier, and the final 25% plan to embrace change.

📰 Here are the top stories in Los Angeles today:

  1. The Housing Authority of the City of Los Angeles (HACLA) bought the Residences at Woodlake at 4555 West Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard. We learned Thursday that the goal is to keep “the rentals affordable for decades.” The 276-unit Crenshaw property cost north of $76 million. “The neighborhood, officials said, is starting to feel pressure from rising rents with the addition of new amenities, job opportunities and improved public transit.” (KTLA)
  2. What will happen to residents at the Hillside Villa in Chinatown? Not (yet) owned by HACLA, a 30-year covenant to maintain low rents expired in 2018. The landlord raised one tenant’s rent from “$950 a month to $2,660 last summer.” The building’s owner doesn’t intend to sell the property and explains management worked with “those tenants who aren’t able to afford the current rents at Hillside Villa” but ran into problems with “a handful of tenants and outside agitators.” HACLA, meanwhile, filed a “petition for right of entry” to appraise the place, and a hearing will be held on January 30. (Spectrum News 1)
  3. A new Hudson Nonstop shop opened in the Los Angeles International Airport’s (LAX) new Delta terminal. Best of all, it’s using “Just Walk Out and Amazon One technologies,” which means no lines at a cash register. By the way, Thursday’s report says that Delta terminal is getting another store called Evolve by Hudson in 2023. It’ll “use a store-within-a-store concept to sell luggage from Herschel Supply Co. and TUMI; electronics from Apple, Beats, Bose and Brookstone; toys from Build-A-Bear Workshop; and accessories from 47 Brand, Happy Socks, and Sunglass Hut.” (Spectrum News 9)
  4. Speaking of LAX, the bomb squad was “at the lower level near Terminal 6” on Thursday morning. Someone had left a bag sitting around, which caused traffic delays “and long wait times for people looking to pick up family members for the holidays.” After lunch, officials gave the all clear, and business returned to normal. (Patch)
  5. Die Hard is coming to the New Beverly Cinema! If you're among the group that says it ain’t Christmas until Hans Gruber falls off Nakatomi Plaza, head to the theater on Saturday at 2 p.m. If that’s too early, there’s a second showing at 7 p.m. Yippee ki-yay! (The New Bev)
