📰 Here are the top five stories today in Los Angeles:

1) A deadly shooting in the “1900 block of Bay Street, near Alameda Street” left a 34-year-old man dead on Thursday. Reportedly, “a man approached the victim and shot at him multiple times.” The victim’s family identified him as a security guard who saw that “the suspect was trying to break into cars when the victim approached the suspect and was shot in the head.” (Patch, KTLA)

2) On Tuesday afternoon, L.A. firefighters were called to the 6500 block of North Mary Ellen Avenue. A home was on fire. They noticed “very heavy black smoke.” It took 58 experts 44 minutes to put out the flames, protect a neighboring structure and assist an injured resident. Two firefighters suffered heat exhaustion. (LAFD)

3) Kevin Hart is in the news. On Wednesday, we learned that he’s called a water waster because he “used more than 117,000 gallons than is budgeted for” his 26-acre Calabasas property. On Friday, he made headlines because he “opened his first plant-based, fast-food restaurant called Hart House on Thursday in the Westchester neighborhood of Los Angeles near the city’s airport.” Check it out at 8901 South Sepulveda Boulevard! (LAist, Spectrum News 1)

4) West Nile virus is in the county! We learned on Friday that “victims live in the Antelope Valley, San Fernando Valley and San Gabriel Valley.” One case is in Pasadena. “The CDC recommends products with the active ingredients DEET, Picaridin, IR3535, or oil of lemon eucalyptus as being safe and effective against mosquitoes that can transmit diseases when used according to the labels.” (Fox)

5) Mark your calendars! The Friends of the LA River are hosting River Fest 2022 on September 25 from 5 to 9 p.m. The location is the Los Angeles State Historic Park and there will be food trucks, booths, beer, and films. (FoLAR)
