📰 2022 News Poll 📍
There was a lot of bad news in 2022. However, there was some great news, too. Which was your favorite good news story of 2022? So far, 50% like the collaboration to end plastic pollution, while 37.5% favor the news that Ethiopia’s civil war is over. The final 12.5% like news of a new malaria vaccine.
📰 Here are the top stories today in Los Angeles:
- A 31-year-old male suspect in the shooting death of a security officer near West 23rd and Flower streets is under arrest. The guard was shot and killed Wednesday morning “in front of The Lorenzo,” which is an “exclusive off-campus housing sponsor of USC athletes.” Reportedly, the guard attempted to escort the suspect from the building’s lobby, which led to the killing. Officers located the suspect sleeping “in a nearby parking structure.” (KTLA)
- Burglars hit the Silver Lake Caregivers dispensary Wednesday morning. Video surveillance shows a group of “six guys just unloading into two cars full, and then they drove off, didn't even close the trunk.” The owner noticed that the suspects knew exactly “where everything was at,” leading him to believe it was an “inside job.” The loss is estimated to be around $500,000. On KFI radio, the loss was believed to be closer to $1 million. (ABC)
- The Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) battled a blaze at 2121 James M Wood Boulevard in Westlake. The four-story apartment building caught fire on the third floor on Thursday at 10:26 a.m. Firefighters noted that a pipe-sweating operation was happening in the third-floor unit, and “the fire extended into the pipe alley.” They opened up the wall, confirmed that the fire did not go into the attic, and put out the flames. (LAFD)
- If you enjoy the fare at Coco's Bakery and Restaurant at York Boulevard and Mesa Avenue, we have bad news. It shut down for good on Wednesday. Scuttlebutt suggests that the building and parking lot had been sold. “Employees heard about the closure, and the loss of their jobs, only a few days earlier at a Christmas party.” Coco’s went on record “saying workers were offered jobs at its other restaurants and the opportunity to interview with the replacement tenant.” (The Eastsider LA)
- Someone abandoned a dog by tying it to a bus stop trash can “near the 7-Eleven at 2nd and Los Angeles streets” on December 19. But this story has a happy ending. We learned on Thursday that the pup would be adopted by the daughter of the Little Tokyo Business Improvement District safety officer who found it. (Rafu Shimpo)
