🤔 Homelessness Poll!
CNN reports that Los Angeles County has a homeless population of “more than 66,400 people.” The numbers are increasing. Do you think that city governments are doing enough? Are there better solutions? Please let me know your thoughts! So far, 28.1% favor more infrastructure investment, 16.7% want federal involvement, 2.1% say faith-based groups need to step up, 5.2% want the military to open its bases, and 46.4% ask for justice system involvement.
📰 Here are the top five stories in Los Angeles today:
1) When firefighters arrived in the area of the 2600 block of North Lombardy Boulevard on Tuesday morning, they faced a 10-acre brush fire. Now, experts say that the El Sereno fire “was deemed suspicious, prompting a response from arson investigators.” It appears that the blaze began in three separate spots. (ABC)
2) The scuttlebutt that the Angels might be for sale is confirmed! On Tuesday, “Angels Baseball announced that the organization has initiated a formal process to evaluate strategic alternatives, including a possible sale of the team.” Owner Arte Moreno explained that the organization has “ultimately come to the conclusion that now is the time.” (Los Angeles Angels)
3) The city expanded monkeypox vaccine eligibility on Monday. Guidelines now include “persons of any gender . . . who engaged in commercial . . . sex” as well as “gay or bisexual men and transgender persons who had skin-to-skin or intimate contact (e.g., kissing, hugging) with persons at large venues or events in the past 14 days.” (LA Public Health)
4) A scathing Tuesday report takes the current City Council to task for hindering new bikeway implementation. “Under Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, bike facility implementation peaked at 200-plus new bikeway lane-miles annually. Since Mayor Eric Garcetti took office in 2013, . . . new bikeway mileage has been dismal, hovering between 10 and 52 miles annually for the past seven years.” Moreover, current bikeway miles that are reported as being improved may actually feature as little as “an extra buffer stripe.” (Streets Blog)
5) The Crypto.com Arena and associated Xbox Plaza at L.A. Live are getting a makeover! Currently the home of the Clippers, Kings, Lakers and Sparks, owner AEG announced Monday that the venue would get a nine-figure renovation. It will include “a new ‘City View Terrace' featuring dining and entertainment with a view of the downtown Los Angeles skyline, a ‘Tunnel Club' with event-level viewing and a backstage window for VIP guests, and the arena's first-ever main concourse suites.” The estimated completion will be in the fall of 2024.
