📰 Here are the top stories in Los Angeles today:
- On Thursday, a car chase ended close to 88th Street and Menlo Avenue. The vehicle was reported stolen earlier that day. It turns out that six juveniles trolled for carjacking victims on Tagged, a dating app, and would "lure them to an area in southeast L.A. where they would rob the victims at gunpoint and take their vehicles." Reportedly, Tagged is the current tool du jour for carjackers. (Fox)
- A 30-year-old man was shot to death in the 6800 block of Simpson Avenue on Friday. The man, who has been identified as a Chicago resident, died on the sidewalk just before midnight. What makes this murder particularly brazen is the fact that the Los Angeles Police Department’s North Hollywood station is just a few blocks up the street. (Patch)
- Millie’s Cafe got in trouble with the U.S. Department of Labor. Reportedly, the restaurant, which has locations at 3524 West Sunset Boulevard and 1399 East Washington Boulevard, “violated the law by illegally denying workers overtime wages and hiding the activity.” The government “reclaimed $370,194 from the owners” last week. (L.A. Eater)
- We learned on Monday that activists reportedly shamed families over the Griffith Park Pony Rides’ last weekend in business. We discussed earlier that the city chose not to extend the attraction’s lease. It's noteworthy that in spite of claims that the ponies were mistreated, a veterinarian found no abuse. But fans of the rides were also there. “Both sides could be heard chanting back and forth throughout the day, with things getting so heated at one point that more than a dozen police officers were called to the scene to defuse the situation.” (CBS)
- Sheriff Robert Luna spent Sunday at the Cushman Watt Scout Center. Close to the 101 and Rosemont Avenue, the sheriff brought along department personnel and volunteers from the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) “to assist Viking Charities assemble food boxes for families who need help this holiday season.” They put together a small mountain of these boxes! (LA County Sheriffs)
