🤔 Homelessness Poll!
CNN reports that Los Angeles County has a homeless population of “more than 66,400 people.” The numbers are increasing. Do you think that city governments are doing enough? Are there better solutions? Please let me know your thoughts! So far, 29.3% favor more infrastructure investment, 16.5% want federal involvement, 1.9% say faith-based groups need to step up, 5.1% want the military to open its bases, and 45.2% ask for justice system involvement.

📰 Here are the top five stories in Los Angeles today:

1) Participating in a street takeover just got more serious. We learned on Friday that in the wake of the looters swarming “a 7-Eleven store in the Harbor Gateway area of Los Angeles as part of a street takeover,” the LAPD is stepping up enforcement. “Police will now be impounding vehicles for up to 30 days of people who take part” in these events. (10 News)

2) Last Sunday, a man struck a street vendor’s cart “at the intersection of Canoga Avenue and Dumetz Road.” He had previously done something similar in May. On Friday, City Councilman Bob Blumenfield filed a motion to “expand protections for street vendors.” “Violent vigilante behavior is illegal and immoral. This individual will be held accountable. Such an attack is clearly an attempt to intimidate both his victim and other street vendors and cannot be tolerated,” he said. (Spectrum News 1)

3) On Thursday, the Board of Recreation and Parks Commission decided to permanently close “Griffith Park Drive from Travel Town to the Griffith Park Composting Facility” to cars. There had already been a temporary closure in place since June because a car struck and killed a 77-year-old cyclist. Drivers had begun using the route to avoid traffic congestion on “the 5 and 134 freeways.” (NBC)

4) The city announced Friday that it is looking for “conceptual ideas from individuals, firms, or groups of artists, designers, architects and others” for a memorial remembering those who died in the 1871 Chinese Massacre. Eighteen residents were killed. (Michael Woo has penned a summary of the incident.) (Culture LA)

5) Mark your calendars! Black Restaurant Week has begun and will continue through August 28. Participants include Harold & Belle's, Hotville Chicken, Les Sisters Southern Kitchen, and Mel's Fish Shack. Best of all, festivities are not limited to brick-and-mortar locations but also include food trucks. "Dive into the African diaspora and tantalize your taste buds with flavors of African, African-American, and Caribbean cuisine." (NBC)
