🤔 Homelessness Poll!
CNN reports that Los Angeles County has a homeless population of “more than 66,400 people.” The numbers are increasing. Do you think that city governments are doing enough? Are there better solutions? Please let me know your thoughts! So far, 27.9% favor more infrastructure investment, 16.3% want federal involvement, 1.9% say faith-based groups need to step up, 4.8% want the military to open its bases, and 47.6% ask for justice system involvement.
📰 Here are the top five stories in Los Angeles today:
1) On Monday, the PD arrested two of six men said to be suspects in the robbery on July 6 that occurred in the 7800 block of Melrose Avenue. The two under arrest “were both out on bail for gun charges at the time.” An apartment search netted officers “two handguns and thousands of dollars in cash.” The men were charged on Wednesday with three counts of robbery and bail is set at $230,000 and $175,000 respectively. (LAPD)
2) As of Thursday, “Virgil Avenue, specifically between Santa Monica Boulevard and Melrose Avenue” has been named the “coolest” street in L.A. What tipped the scales in its favor was a “flourishing food scene.” Examples include the wine bar Melody and Courage Bagels. (Time Out)
3) In November, we talked about the frustration of patrons who wanted to know what’s going on with San Pedro’s beloved Walker’s Café at 700 West Paseo del Mar. We learned on Wednesday that the “City Council unanimously approved the Historic-Cultural Monument nomination” for this venue. However, there have been reports of “unpermitted construction” at the site. (Patch, Los Angeles Conservancy)
4) On Wednesday afternoon, customers at a Hollywood Jack in the Box were surprised to have Los Angeles Dodgers pitchers Tony Gonsolin, Evan Phillips and Alex Vesia serving them. One fan broke out in tears when she met her favorite Dodger. It is fair to say that this Dodgers Love L.A. Community Tour event was a success! Meanwhile, Clayton Kershaw was at the Miguel Contreras Learning Complex for the opening of a recreation center. He hosted a ping pong tournament for the kids. (MLB)
5) Mark your calendars! The Board of Supervisors will host a live virtual board meeting on August 30 at 9:30 a.m. On the agenda are, among other line items, public health orders, a water shortage contingency plan and renovations to Camp Gonzales for the L.A. training center program. (LA County)
