Peninsula Home Seriously Damaged By Fire

A two-alarm fire in an Old Palo Alto neighborhood home was extinguished on Sunday, but caused significant damage.

SAN FRANCISCO PENINSULA -- A two-alarm fire in an Old Palo Alto neighborhood home was extinguished Sunday afternoon, but not before it caused significant damage, a deputy fire chief said.

The fire was first reported at about 11:30 a.m. March 19 at 335 Seale Ave.

When firefighters arrived they saw smoke coming from the roof of a one-story, single-family home with a basement, Deputy Chief Catherine Capriles said.

The house was locked so firefighters had to force their way in, and when they did, smoke was close to the floor, which fire officials said means the fire had probably been burning for awhile. The home was built many years ago with heavy laths and plaster construction so no one probably noticed the fire until it broke through the roof, Capriles said.

Firefighters had the blaze under control as of 12:19 p.m. No one was home, and no injuries were reported.

It appears the main seat of the fire was in the kitchen, but the cause is still under investigation, Capriles said.
