5 Malibu Beaches Unsafe For Swimming Due To Bacteria Levels

Recent testing revealed five Malibu beaches have bacteria levels that exceed health standards, officials said.

MALIBU, CA — High bacteria levels prompted public health officials on Monday to warn against getting in the water at nine Los Angeles County beaches, including five in Malibu.

The LA County Department of Public Health collects samples weekly from various sites year-round to test and monitor bacteria levels and issues warnings when levels exceed health standards.

This week, officials warned that swimming in the water at the following beaches may cause illness:

  • Mothers Beach in Marina Del Rey
  • Las Flores Creek at Las Flores State Beach
  • Walnut Creek at Paradise Cove
  • Marie Canyon Storm Drain at Puerco Beach (100 yards up and down the coast from the public access steps)
  • Inner Cabrillo Beach in San Pedro
  • Santa Monica Pier (100 yards up and down the coast from the pier)
  • Solstice Creek at Dan Blocker County Beach
  • Pena Creek at Las Tunas County Beach (100 yards in each direction of the outfall)
  • Windward storm drain at Venice Beach (100 yards up and down the coast from the storm drain)

Meantime, officials on Monday cleared earlier bacteria warnings at Santa Ynez Storm Drain at Will Rogers State Beach and Topanga Canyon Beach.

The test results come as temperatures have significantly cooled off across the Southland, though hot conditions are likely to return at the end of the week. The National Weather Service on Monday said it's likely this weekend will be significantly warmer and drier, which temps of up to 100 in many inland areas.
