MALIBU, CA — Beachgoers should stay out of the water until at least Thursday morning after tropical storm Hilary dumped over 4 inches of rain in the Malibu area, the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health warned.

Health officials on Sunday issued an Ocean Water Quality Rain Advisory for all Los Angeles County beaches, including those in Malibu. The advisory is in effect until 9 a.m. Thursday, but could be extended.

Runoff from rainstorms can lead to elevated bacteria levels in the ocean which can cause illness, especially in children and the elderly.
