Learn How To Properly Recycle Organic Waste At Malibu's Next Workshop
You're now required to separate food waste from garbage – you can learn more and get a free kitchen bin at a workshop Wednesday.
MALIBU, CA – As Malibu residents are now required to separate food and yard waste into a dedicated curbside bin, the city is offering a free kitchen collection container for residents who attend an online training Sept. 18.
Since 2023, residents have been required to separate food products and other organic waste and put them into their green organics bin. The change was imposed on businesses and multi-family residences in October.
The rules were set in response to SB 1383, which aims to reduce organic waste disposal statewide by 75 percent and rescue at least 20 percent of edible food by 2025. It’s meant to reduce emissions of methane, a greenhouse gas.

On Sept. 18 at 7 p.m., city officials will host a Zoom workshop where residents can learn more about what’s required and how the program works. Attendees will receive a free 1.9-gallon kitchen collection bin.
A kitchen collection bin can make organics recycling more convenient: Residents can collect waste throughout the week by placing scraps in a small container on their countertop or in their freezer or refrigerator and dump the contents into their curbside bin before trash day.
