How can we rise above our ego?
The Talmud tells us that “a prisoner cannot free himself from his prison.” That is, he needs to be assisted by those already free. And since we are all prisoners in one way or another, each of us can use a helping hand.
Consider that many of us have been blessed to have some sort of mentor who, in one way or another, has helped guide us in our respective journey of growth. Perhaps this is why so many yet search for someone wiser and more experienced, and yet not someone hardened to the cynical “lock-up” of everyday self-indulgent living.

As a young boy, I recall saying the word "Mommy" and "Tatte." I also recall saying “Rebbe” -- a household word going back many generations. And it referred to the Chassidic master to whom our family looked to for guidance in life.
"Rebbe" is more than a rabbi. A Rebbe refers to a master of the mystical path of Chassidic Judaism, as taught by the Baal Shem Tov. Thus, Rebbe is the title by which Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson has come to be known worldwide. His guidance and leadership reached beyond religious affiliations, and his teachings continue to guide and inspire peoples from all walks of life. The Rebbe was a mentor to all of us.

This coming Tuesday will mark the 19th anniversary since the Rebbe's passing.
I recall when I became a young adult, I told my parents I needed to find my G-d-given path in life. My journey of self-discovery brought me even closer to the one whom I am proud to refer to as my Rebbe. The passion in his heart for all of humanity was endless. His deep desire for a world of goodness and kindness permeated every part of his leadership. His guidance continues to fill me and countless others with joy and hope, faith and trust, for a better tomorrow. I pray that his dream for a world of true peace and light be realized in our time.
