The Allure Of Swimming Pools in L.A., According To The L.A. Times
The history of swimming pools in L.A. includes the story of Ethel Prioleau, a former owner of Bruce's Beach.

MANHATTAN BEACH, CA —"...we are living 25 miles, five miles, even a scant hundred feet from that splendid dunk known as the Pacific Ocean, and what are we known for the world over?Swimming pools," writes L.A. Times columnist Patt Morrison in Tuesday's paper.
Her piece gives the history of swimming pools in Los Angeles. In 1925, L.A. officially segregated its swimming pools and includes the story of Ethel Prioleau. Prioleau and her husband were among the owners of Bruce's Beach property in Manhattan Beach.
"Prioleau sent her kids to the nearest swimming pool on a whites-only day. The kids were sent home," Morrison writes.
