Protesters Hit The Sand To Say Black Lives Matter And To Workout

Cedric Jones, actor, boxer, owner of Beastie Gym in Manhattan Beach, organized a protest to say Black Lives Matter. He then led a workout.

MANHATTAN BEACH, CA — About 120 people came to the "Unite for Equality" protest in Manhattan Beach Saturday. Organizer and Manhattan Beach business owner Cedric Jones wanted to bring people together in a loving way to learn more about each as well as how to gain momentum and support for moving beyond racism and one of its byproducts, police brutality.

Protesters brought homemade signs and gathered at the base of the Manhattan Beach Pier, the site of two previous protests in recent weeks. Many of them had gathered at Jones' Beastie Gym at 10:15 a.m. for the 2-mile run to the pier. After a few minutes in front of the gated pier (it's been closed due to COVID-19), the group moved to the sand just south of the pier.

Elizabeth Scott of Redondo Beach and a group of her friends joined the protest. She'd heard about it from a friend she runs with and wanted to show up and show her support. Scott, who is in training to be an emergency room doctor at Harbor UCLA, was surprised by the number of people who weren't wearing masks. She and her fellow doctors were as they sat on the sand. She said wearing a mask is purely a "thoughtful" thing to do since it protects those around you.

After the protest, Jones led many of his gym members and others in a bear crawl across the sand followed by distance jumping. Everyone engaged in these activities was getting a workout.
