• Update: Earthquake struck region near Martinez, CA on Jan. 9 - 2.3 magnitude recorded (sacbee.com) — A small 2.3 magnitude earthquake shook just south-southwest of Martinez Friday evening, close enough that some residents may have felt a brief jolt. While no damage is reported, officials remind locals to review basic earthquake safety steps like drop, cover, and hold on. The report also notes several slightly stronger quakes near San Ramon over the past week.
   

• Concord Man Suspected In Murder Of Parents Dead At Martinez Jail (patch.com) — A man jailed at the Martinez Detention Facility after being arrested in connection with his parents’ deaths in Concord was found unconscious in his cell Thursday and later died, authorities said. Contra Costa County sheriff’s officials report he appeared to have inflicted head injuries on himself earlier that morning. The sheriff’s office and district attorney are now investigating his in-custody death.
   

• Man Lures Child With Xbox Trump Sues 2 Small CA Cities (patch.com) — A man jailed in Martinez on murder charges related to his parents’ deaths has died in custody at the county facility, and investigators are seeking surveillance footage from nearby residents and businesses. The broader roundup also notes regional safety alerts, including a Bay Area warning about poisonous wild mushrooms and a Trump administration lawsuit involving two small California cities over natural gas rules.
